The Role of Reading Prosody in Syntactic and Semantic Integration: Evidence from Eye Movements
نویسنده
چکیده
Eye-tracking methodology was used to examine the hypothesis that prosody contributes to integrative processing because it conveys the structure of the sentence, and therefore violating the correspondence between prosody and structure should result in difficulty in processing. Previous eye-movement studies indicate that subject-predicate mismatching (e.g., the boys eats) results in prolonged gaze durations. Experiment 1 showed that this mismatching effect, assumed to disclose online syntactic integration, was delayed or eliminated when the correspondence between prosody and the structure of the sentence was violated. In Experiment 2 sentences containing semantic incongruity (e.g., the tables eat) were used to examine whether semantic integration is similarly interrupted. The results suggest that when the correspondence between prosody and structure is violated semantic integration is delayed. The proposal that fluent and coherent reading prosody helps with online integration because it conveys the structure of the sentence is discussed in view of the results.

Reading aloud: eye movements and prosody
This study aims to connect data from ocular movements and reading aloud speech to syntactic and discursive properties of texts, in order to understand integrative cognitive processes during reading for understanding and to identify prosodic and eye movements’ indicators of reading fluency. Assuming that in reading aloud there is a close interaction between syntax structure and speech prosody, w...
متن کاملImplicit prosody and contextual bias in silent reading
Eye-movement research on implicit prosody has found effects of lexical stress on syntactic ambiguity resolution, suggesting that metrical well-formedness constraints interact with syntactic category assignment. Building on these findings, the present eyetracking study investigates whether contextual bias can modulate the effects of metrical structure on syntactic ambiguity resolution in silent ...
متن کاملSemantic Prosody: Its Knowledge and Appropriate Selection of Equivalents
In translation, choosing appropriate equivalent is essential to convey the right message from source-text to target-text, and one of the issues that may have a determinative role in appropriate equivalent choice is the semantic prosody (SP) behavior of words and the relation existing between the SP of a word and semantic senses (i.e. negativity, positivity or neutrality) of its collocations in ...

متن کاملEvaluation of “Mosaic 1 Reading”: A Microstructural Approach to Textual Analysis of Pedagogical Materials
To analyze and evaluate textbooks, researchers have either proposed scales and checklists to be filled by teachers and learners or conducted qualitative investigations of the match between SLA theories and textbook activities. This study, however, employs the microstructural approach of schema theory to scrutinize the reading passages of “Mosaic 1 Reading”. To this end, 17 passages of the textb...
